Ain’t No Business

Tuesday, April 29th, 2003

Perhaps thank God for that…Add me to the list of people who think that the way standard “show business” operates is generally convoluted. That’s one reason i had a mind to start the label in the first place. Everyone seems to not have a Right View of things–from an artist who may think they’re worth more than they are, and don’t want to do sufficient work to secure their success to the labels who lack trust in the artists…it’s like a man/woman relationship where everyone’s got their guard up. this is MUSIC — Music is comprised of a large percentage of passion, and it’s difficult for the “typical” indie artist to break through ‘cos it’s difficult to separate passion from what others would call Business. i have no idea what i’m really ranting about–i just have friends who want to make music but are stifled by Business decisions that don’t take into account the humanity of the artists. These artists may as well be in federal prison the way things are going down.

The Lord knows, though. He does, and sees, and “scores” will be settled in the end.

i am jon. jon madison. son, father, husband, hack of many, many trades. actually i’ve learned and am learning that i’m not a hack at all…i have too many talents than i think i should have sometimes…the trick is to take the talent that i have and have developed, focus on something (or some limited amount of things) and set a price for it. it’s not terribly as tricky as it used to be, but i could go on about how i’ve struggled with the whole “charging for my services” thing. these days though, my family’s well being depends on it. i swear that right now i am the only jobless madison in our family. it doesn’t happen often–we’re used to being employed–anywhere. which leads me to my next thought…next week i’ll have my feet on the ground really looking for employment, and if for the time being i end up at best buy, i am down. i have to keep reminding myself “well, you did have a choice (for what that choice was worth), and you chose to be free.” in that, there’s a great relief, and hope, but that also means that it’s time to hustle.
