New Job, New (York) City
Sunday, November 16th, 2003Most of you who know me probably have heard that i am employed now (by someone other than myself) now…these kinds of news are so “anti-news” to me these days though, that i forget to even mention it–everything is a continuum, and stuff like “having a new job” just don’t seem terribly significant…that and the fact that i was working alongside these guys for the past 5 months on a project, so it’s the same cast right now :). Anyway, Thought For Food Tech, LLC will continue to exist, but I won’t be taking any clients now–it will still exist, though, as the “brand” that its software projects retain (imtask, jaimbizzle, mmemento…).
I was immediately dumped to New York City for a week to do some project analysis. The work itself was a lot of fun–always challenging to try to compress about 3 weeks work into one :). This was, however my first time in New York e City, and i was wowed, no doubt, the first night. People had told me that it was “like Chicago, only bigger”. I’ve spent a ton of time in Chicago so i know my way around the downtown area a bit. There’s definitely a difference between Chicago and the area of NYC i was around (broadway/7th manhattan/times square/madison square garden). The place is just *crazy bright*…talk about the city that never sleeps!
It amazes me that a city like chicago, which in general is so busy–generally shuts down after a certain time. I had no trouble at all walking down the block and picking up a pizza at 10:30/11:00p.m. from one of several that were open! I got used to it around the second night (i’m a quick adapter) . It’s been a while that i’ve been so enthusiastic about walking 20 blocks a night (distance between worksite and the hotel); even in the crazy wind that manifested itself this past week. I heart NYC (at least what i saw :)!
the hotels are expensive though. was a bit of a shock coming from WI and paying about $50/night to NYC and the “good” deals are anything under $200!
